Neuroscience Concepts: 

  • Brain layout (cerebral cortex; diencephalon; midbrain, pons, brainstem, cerebellum)

  • Relevant limbic structures (hypothalamus, amygdala)

  • Autonomic nervous system branches 

  • Stress response physiology (Hypothalamus Pituitary Adrenal Axis) 

  • Cortisol and effects of prolonged exposure

  • Behavioral effects of stress

    • Depression

    • Anger/anxiety (autonomic response)

    • Addiction

 

Occupational Focus: Strategies for Coping With and Managing Stress

  • Strategies for Coping with Stress:

    • Increasing perceived control

    • Optimism

    • Social support (including psychotherapy)

  • Strategies for Managing Stress:

    • Exercise

    • Meditation

    • Religious beliefs/ faith

    • Cognitive flexibility 

Participants were also given the opportunity to practice a brief guided meditation video from YouTube, highlighting the availability of free online resources.
